CTR 2013 Food

Here is my food plan for this years CTR attempt.

With the Tarryall detour this year, there will be no resupply option in Bailey. So I will carry two days of food from the start, refuel in Copper for one day of riding and then pickup previously mailed box with 4 days worth of food in Buena Vista to get me to Silverton where I will buy another day’s worth of food. Seems easy.

So in all I will be pre-packing 6 days worth of food – 4 of which will be shipped General Delivery to Buena Vista.

One day of food will look something like this:

– 6 ‘meals’ or ‘snacks’ a day

– 115 Calories/oz

– 2.8 lbs of food

– 5,200 Calories total (2400 from Carbs, rest from fat)

Where’s the coffee you ask? Yeah, I’ll be asking the same thing on Day 2!

Food Calories Carbs Calories Per Meal

  1. Hi Nick
I have toured the north portion of the trail, above US 50, twice and plan to participate in the CTR proper this year, though I’ll be ITT’ing it and leaving a few days before the initial start on the 24th.
I was particularly interested in your food list. A few questions:
1 would you consider a light/small stove for rehydrating freeze dried entrees and coffee?
2 would you consider jerky or something for more protein, or was this blend or carbs protein fats good?
3 Did the General Delivery resupply in BV work well and is there a system like that in place in Leadville and Silverton?
    Thanks again for the information

    1. Hi Steve, thanks for reading. I don’t really need a stove during a race. If I am doing a ride on my own than I bring a stove…mostly because I have more time to relish a hot meal in camp. During a race, I just don’t want to spend the time heating water – sounds silly, but it’s true. When I do carry a stove it’s an Esbit stove with fuel tabs, and I use an old Foster’s beer can as a mug/bowl/pot. The stove, fuel, lighter, and spork all fit in the can. I think carrying a good blend of fats and carbs is fine if you can supplement with protein at resupplies (sandwiches, burgers, etc). I wouldn’t do the Post Office delivery again – it was too stressful to make sure I made it in time to the P.O. and the food just seemed stale and unappetizing once I opened the box! There is a Post Office in Silverton that people use for food drops. I don’t think you will need to do so in Leadville, simply because you will be so close to BV at that point – 50 miles or so, just hit a restaurant and gas station. Some other food ideas: Tailwind Nutrition and Trail Butter. Good luck out there.
